The 5 Basic Steps for Finding a Good Electric Contractor

When you need to find a good residential electrical contractor for your major home project, such as a remodel or an addition, following the five basic steps below will help make the process easier.

1) Ask for Recommendations

Ask for recommendations from your network of family members, friends, and other homeowners. Discuss the projects that were done and if they were satisfied. A good electrical contractor should also do strong background checks on their employees for your safety.

2) Verify Licensing and Insurance

Verify the electrician you are considering is licensed and has proper insurance. As required by law, a licensed electrician must have worker’s compensation and liability insurance covering accidents and injuries. Please note that bonded electricians carry insurance covering instances when an electrician abandons a project.

3) Credentials & Training

Based on their previous work, make an evaluation of the experience and capabilities of each electrician you are considering. During the process, verify that the electrician is properly licensed. In addition, there are special licenses for specific items such as fire alarms. In addition to the state license, an electrician may also be licensed as journeyman or master electrician by the county. Card-carrying electricians have passed a code requirements test. Be sure to hire an electrician that has experience handling a project that is similar to yours.

4) References & Reviews

Find out as much as possible about the types of residential projects the electricians you are considering have handled in the past. Ask electricians for professional references from past projects, and then phone their past clients to discuss the quality of their work. Check the online reviews of electricians as well.

5) Project Experience

Before finalizing your choice of residential electrical contractor, consider their fee as only one aspect for making your decision. You are risking too much by hiring unqualified electricians for a major home project.
