Why Your Home Needs Surge Protection Today – Part 2

As discussed in Part 1, surge protection helps electronic devices work better, stay dependable, and last longer. This is especially relevant in modern homes because electronic components are growing more vulnerable. Work with a reputable local licensed electrician to develop a surge protection strategy. Part 2 will discuss three more reasons why your home needs surge protection today.

Limitations of Surge Protection

Modern surge protectors divert excess energy from the hot wire to the neutral and ground wires, letting a reduced amount of electricity to enter connected equipment. The single source of damaging external surges is the hot wire because the neutral and ground wires are attached to each other and bound to an earth rod at every service entrance.

The above is described as the 3-Mode Protection process, but it is not effective due to high energy power line surges being diverted into fragile low-voltage data lines within computers and the reference grounds of AV equipment. This degrades integrated circuits and shortend their service lives. The surge protector will also degrade gradually and ultimately fail, resulting in all attached electronics becoming unprotected.

Advanced Series Mode (ASM)

ASM surge protection is capable of absorbing surges while protecting its own components. Highly reliable, advanced series mode devices do not depend on the ground for surge protection, and there is no ground contamination.

Powered by standard line voltage, electronic equipment is protected from degradation and damaging surges. Over time, an ASM protector will not suffer degradation, and so maintenance and replacement won’t be necessary. Several beneficial ASM features include EMI/RFI filtering, noise minimization, inrush current elimination, and automatic shutdown should a catastrophic over/under voltage incident occur.

Savings From Surge Protection

When electronics gradually become faulty and then eventually fail due to electrical disturbances, the results are costly, hazardous, and inconvenient. In addition to preventing electronic equipment from being damaged by lightning strikes, surge protection also makes them more dependable with longer service lives.
